Barn Music

Now that I am blogging I find that the craziest little things get my attention and become the subject of blog posts. Maybe this is just a short run thing as I am new to writing a blog. Needing to come up with things to write was actually one of the fears that made me afraid to start a blog. So far it has been the opposite. Since I started I have had lots ideas. Whether they are of interest to my readers is yet to be determined but I am just going to go for it and see what happens.

Anyway, I was cleaning the barn last night and I started thinking about barn music. To me a barn is not a barn without some good music on the radio. I have always played country stations.

At times I have attributed this to the horses. Our head horse, Buck, is a Western horse through and through. He was born in Kansas and lived most of his life in New Mexico. When he got to Pennsylvania and saw all those green fields and shaded bridle paths he was not sure what to think. I imagined that having his Country classics on gave him comfort in all the adjustments.

Silver is a retired show jumper who is an Irish Sport horse. He is very elegant and I suppose I have sometimes imagined that he would like classical music. Maybe Mozart CDs would be his idea of heaven. Who knows. Given his Irish roots maybe he would want the Chieftians. I like both of those myself but am usually too busy to put CDs on to play so he is stuck with Country too.

Quincy is the little guy in our barn. Even though he is 20 now, he will always be my baby. He is “Quincy Bear” and “Little Quince” to us and I am afraid we don’t give him much chance for input. I mainly imagine him being willing to go along with whatever his big brothers want.

Enough putting responsibility on the horses, I am a life long fan of Country. I love all music. I find classical music inspiring and calming and I have many pop rock favorites. I was a Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles and Eagles fan in my college years. But when I am cleaning the barn and trying to chill from the stresses and strains of life in today’s world, there is something about Country that is comfort food without the calories.

I can always remember the various times in my life when certain songs were at the top of the charts. Those tend to be good memories. There is nothing like a country song to bring on a good cry when you need it. Talk about political commentary, it is all there in the lyrics. There is something very American about country music. I am from Kentucky so I know the Bluegrass runs deep. Oh, I forgot humor and a belly laugh. My all time favorite in this category is “I Think I’ll Hire A Wino to Decorate Our Home.”
