A Horse Lover’s Thoughts on Keeping Ducks?

Muscovy DuckI found another interesting blog post. This one is from a horse lover who is keeping ducks. It really caught my attention.

These warm days that bring good feelings about spring also mean the flies are right around the corner. In this post ducks are described as “fly and mosquito eating machines.” This sounded pretty good at least in theory. I tried to picture a flock of ducks running from stall to stall or around the turnout this summer when the flies are at their height as described by the blogger.

Luckily I ran this by a local woman who takes care of the horses and barn when I am away at book events and expos. She grew up on a farm nearby and raised ducks when she was growing up. She has also raised chickens and guinea fowl at various times. She had a dramatic reaction when I mentioned ducks. “They are so messy! There would be duck poop everywhere.”

OK. I think I will stick with reading blogs by people who are primarily chicken keepers. She also says ducks can become very aggressive. No problem to let this idea go. We do not have a pond at Pathfinder Farm anyway.
