A Hotel at the Kentucky Horse Park: Are They Crazy?

I could not believe it when I heard during my recent visit that a hotel may be built at the Kentucky Horse Park! I did some research. Apparently the park was hit hard when the economy crashed in 2008-9 with visitors and revenues way down. The FEI World Games in 2010 were huge success for the local economy in Lexington, KY bringing in 200 million, but the Kentucky Horse Park actually lost money due to the cost of constructing the arena and venues and the fact that the Park was closed to visitors for the construction..

Now the Business Plan for helping Park finances, written of course, by people with a “business mindset,” includes constructing a hotel to “improve the revenue stream.”

The link below explains this in more detail.

Kentucky Horse Park Hotel

I grew up here, way before the Kentucky Horse Park was built and remember the vision of those who established it. They wanted to create a place where the beauty of Kentucky horse farms could be accessible to all Kentuckians and visitors to the state, a facility with an equine rescue component, and a celebration of the horse. Anyone who has visited the Kentucky Horse Park can see they succeeded in this mission beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

Horse Park HotelPerhaps rather than digging a deeper hole with a large ticket hotel which has no place on a beautiful Kentucky horse farm, it would be more prudent to further the true mission of the Kentucky Horse Park by maintaining and enhancing the facilities for visiting families and the horses and seeking large donations from horse people to improve the endowment.
